Our Work Is Not Done #MixedFeelings

Photo Credit: Gage Skidmore from Peoria, AZ, United States of America, CC BY-SA 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons While I am excited that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have won the presidency back from Trump and Pence, I caution people from assuming that the fight is over. Yes, Biden will be able to undo every executive order Trump put in place rather quickly.  He will be able to restore calm to our nation and rebuild our standing with our allies.  He will be able to rejoin the Paris Accord and the World Health Organization.  There is no doubt these are phenomenal…

Fees First, Not Furloughs

Fees First, Not Furloughs

Drive through the tunnel in Seattle and it’ll cost you from $1.25 to $4.25. Want to visit a state park? That will cost you from $11.25 to $35. Are you a mental health counselor in WA state? If so, I hope you paid your $150 fee, per year, to the state for the privilege of being licensed. Washingtonians, and many who are just visiting, now have to pay a “fee” for myriad public functions which until relatively recently, were paid for by our taxes. But if you are a lobbyist making $450k a year, or a campaign which spends $25million…

Biden/Harris Win! The Nation Rejoices

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZ2l3QoYQow The scene at Black Lives Matter Square in Washington, DC as thousands took to the streets in celebration of Joe Biden and Kamal Harris winning the White House. We all feel a little lighter today. It felt like the longest week of a very long year, during a presidential administration that has been tedious and challenging at its best and life-threatening at its worst. The wait is over as this morning the race in Pennsylvania, follow by Nevada, were called for Vice-President Joe Biden and Senator Kamala Harris. Harris will be the first woman, and woman of color, to…

New Interfaith Works Shelter to Open in February

New Interfaith Works Shelter to Open in February

A new, 38-bed shelter for highly vulnerable people experiencing homelessness is beginning to take shape on Olympia’s eastern edge. The shelter, at 3444 Martin Way, is scheduled to open by early February 2021, says Interfaith Works Executive Director Meg Martin. The 5,250-square-foot “Sprung Structure” is a heavy-duty modular building similar to those used in a number of American and Canadian cities to shelter unhoused people.  Meg Martin, Executive Director, Interfaith Works Martin praised the Interfaith Works Board and funding partners. “At a time when the COVID-19 crisis has made all of our lives harder, this community has come together with…

City Offers Olive Branch to Just Housing; Seeks Collaboration, Will Not Ticket RVs on Ensign Road

Ty Gundel and Micky Nelson, a resident, discuss the pending move. The city of Olympia is acknowledging missteps it made on Tuesday when it barricaded Ensign Road south of St. Peter Hospital to put up no-parking signs while it encouraged individuals living in vehicles along the roadway to pack up and move.  The morning was fraught with stress and confusion among residents and those who advocate alongside them. A letter from Just Housing sharply criticized the city’s actions, including the lack of communication about what was to occur and the city’s decision to temporarily bar access to the site. In…

Fear Looms as SCOTUS is Reshaped for a Generation

Fear Looms as SCOTUS is Reshaped for a Generation

If you are a member of the LGBTQ+ community, you woke this week to the realization that once again there is reason to live in fear.  Amy Coney Barrett chose the one person currently on the courts who believed that two men having sex in their home 20 years ago in Texas should remain a felony to swear her in.  She comes from a conservative background that considers us abominations.   On social media I have seen posts about people deciding if they need to get legal power of attorney papers drawn up, living wills that very specifically name their…

County Commission Commits Cash to Campers

County Commission Commits Cash to Campers

The City of Olympia has identified its firing range parking lot at Carpenter Road and Martin Way as a possible short-term, safe parking location for people currently living in their vehicles. The effort got a boost Tuesday when Thurston County Commissioners, in a 2-1 vote, approved $530,000 in one-time funding to help set up the safe parking site. The money comes from state fees people pay when recording documents with the county; a state emergency housing grant; and federal CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act money. The city requested the funding from the county late last week. Primarily,…

City Conducts Pre-Dawn Soft Raid On Ensign Road RV Community; Won’t Evict, Will Ticket Residents Who Remain

Before dawn this morning, City of Olympia Public Works employees and their vehicles, including two bulldozers, and multiple Olympia Police Department officers rolled onto Ensign Road south of St. Peter Hospital, lights flashing, and barricaded it from Martin Way to the hospital entrance. City employees then went door-to-door to tell the residents of vehicles parked along the roadway that while they didn’t have to move today, if they didn’t, they would be ticketed. “This is just pure intimidation,” said Tyler Gundel, of Just Housing, which advocates alongside the residents of vehicles parked along Ensign Road. “They are very clearly trying…

BREAKING: City Calls Off Sweep after Attorney General Weighs In

Ty Gundel and Micky Nelson, a resident, discuss the pending move. The move is off. After receiving a letter from the state Attorney General’s Office Monday saying the city’s plan to evict residents living in vehicles along Ensign Road is a likely violation of the state’s eviction moratorium, the city changed its mind.Residents will not have to relocate or have their vehicles towed.“We will continue to work towards a voluntary cleanup along Ensign, but will not be compelling any of the campers to move tomorrow,” Assistant City Manager Keith Stahley said in an email to council members obtained by The Tribune…

City Won’t Budge on RV Community Sweep

Note: This story is developing and will be updated as events warrant. Ty Gundel and Micky Nelson, a resident, discuss the pending move. With less than a day to go before their city of Olympia-imposed deadline to move, residents of vehicles parked along Ensign Road and those who advocate with them still don't know where they will go. "We are still in limbo," said Deborah, a resident of the area for the past few months. "It is so stressful," she said as she welled up in tears on Saturday.Neither the residents nor those who advocate with them know what to…
